One of the most important wine competitions in Spain
The town of Samaniego hosted the XXXI Wine Competition with DOCa Rioja, an event that, once again, has recognized the quality of our wines. On this occasion, six of our wines have received some prize in this competition organized by the Rioja Alavesa Harvest Festival.
Valdelana, one of the most awarded wineries at the Rioja Alavesa contest
The six awards obtained this year have been a milestone within the contest since it is very difficult for the same winery to win so many awards in the same edition. Likewise, Valdelana has accumulated a large number of distinctions in recent years.

These have been the six awards this year
Four of this year’s awards have gone to wines from our unique vineyards, one of the projects in which we have invested the most energy and affection in recent times. For this reason, it could be said that the joy has been even greater. The greatest distinction has been in the category “White Wines from Unique Vineyards”, where Pared de los Curas and Tronco Negro have achieved first and second place, while Santa Cruz and Senda Las Damas have been second and third best “Red Wines from Unique Vineyards”. For its part, the Juan Valdelana wine has achieved second place in the “Great Wines – Personal Wines” category and our iconic Barón Ladrón de Guevara has been the third best “Tinto Crianza”.
Our whites, the great winners of the last edition
In the XXX edition of the competition organized in Laguardia, our whites Ladrón de Guevara and Familia Valdelana were distinguished as the best and the second best white wine from the Rioja Denomination of Origin.
Familia Valdelana was already the best young white of the DOCa Rioja 2022
The town of Lanciego hosted the XXVII Rioja Alavesa Harvest Festival in 2022, an edition that recognized our Familia Valdelana as the best white of the DOCa Rioja and our signature Agnvs as the second best of the whites. fermented in barrels.
Our whites were also distinguished in 2020
The year of the pandemic our white wines were also awarded. In this case, the Familia Valdelana white was once again considered the best young white and the AGNVS Malvasía the best barrel-aged white.
AGNVS and Ladrón de Guevara de Autor, best crianzas in 2019
It has been the whites who have taken all the recognition in recent years, but the glory went to the Crianzas previously. Agnvs and Ladrón de Guevara autor were considered the best and the second best aged wine of the DOCa. Rioja among the more than 300 participants in the edition held in Baños de Ebro in 2019.
Our good results in this competition began in 2018, when our signature Agnvs won the medal for the best unique wine from Rioja in the competition held that year in Elvillar.
Juan Valdelana, the main responsible for these good results
It is the result of great teamwork that our wines have achieved such success in this competition, a milestone of which all the generations that have preceded us have been a part. However, the vast majority of award-winning wines today have the seal of Juan Valdelana, who has been connected to the world of wine from a very young age. Juan Valdelana graduated in oenology from the University of La Rioja (2017), where he won the award for the best final year project, which allowed him to work at the Rioja Regulatory Council and immerse himself in the roots of the DOCa Rioja for a few months. Later he graduated in Agricultural Engineering, which has given him knowledge in all areas of wine preparation. Furthermore, he has had the opportunity to work in wineries in different places in Spain and the world (Tenerife, Rías Baixas, Napa Valley…), which has allowed him to explore other ways of experiencing wine.
Also note that Juan has spent years treasuring and caring for unique vineyards, the great winners of the last edition of this contest. Currently, Juan has eleven vineyards of this type, of which he is producing seven very special wines. Among other success, Tronco Negro was distinguished as the best singular of the DOCa Rioja by the prestigious magazine Decanter.
We have been receiving great joy at the Rioja Alavesa Harvest Festival for several years, but we keep the energy and enthusiasm intact to continue preparing good wines in the future. Thank you all for your constant support.
