What to see in Elciego

Elciego, a village steeped in history

Centuries of history can still be felt throughout the streets of Elciego. Despite its small size, the village is home to a rich architectural, historical and cultural heritage.

One of its most emblematic landmarks is the Church of San Andrés, built in the 16th century. Its two impressive towers immediately stand out, but the church is particularly notable for the wide variety of architectural styles it brings together, including Romanesque, Baroque, Renaissance, Gothic and Neoclassical influences.

The Church of San Andrés is usually closed to the public, although guided visits can be arranged through the Elciego Tourist Office.

The village is also home to another religious building, the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Plaza, located in the Town Hall square. Dating from the 18th century, the chapel houses an image of the Virgen de la Plaza, the patron saint of Elciego. Regular religious services are held here.

Beyond these two religious monuments, Elciego offers many other places of interest to visitors. Highlights include the Town Hall, the Plaza Mayor, and several historic palaces built during the 17th and 18th centuries, such as the Palacio Ramírez de la Piscina, the Palacio Zárate Nabar and the Casa de los Hierros. Casa de los Hierros is the popular name given to the Palacio Navarrate Ladrón de Guevara. Navarrate Ladrón de Guevara was one of Elciego’s most distinguished historical figures and also gives his name to one of our wines.

But beyond its best-known monuments, simply walking through the streets of Elciego is an experience in itself. Despite the passing of time, the village has retained much of its historic character.

Elciego is an essential destination for wine lovers. Several working wineries can be found throughout the village, some of which offer guided tours and wine tastings.

We also invite you to visit our Valdelana Winery Museum, where you can discover the history of wine and our region through a guided tour, followed by a tasting of our wines and other local products.
Elciego has plenty to offer, particularly for those interested in wine and wine tourism. Its location also makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the wider Rioja Alavesa wine region.
Come and discover it for yourself. We will make sure you feel completely at home.
Just 5 kilometres from our accommodation is Laguardia, officially recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain.
