Our wine Seda de Oro Reserva 2016, made by Juan Valdelana, has won gold as the best Tempranillo in the World in the AWC Vienna International Competition. This international competition held in Vienna (Austria) is considered the most important wine competition in the world.
AWC Vienna, the most prestigious wine competition in the world.
The prestige of AWC Vienna is due to its almost 20 years of existence, in addition to the large number of entries it receives and its strict tasting rules. In its 2020 edition, the contest has received a total of 11,232 wines from 1,510 producers from 41 different countries. A total of 39 gold medals have been distributed among all these wines, with Seda de Oro receiving the best tempranillo.
Seda de Oro, the elaboration of the best tempranillo in the world.
Seda de Oro is a wine made from grapes extracted from the oldest vineyards of our family, the same ones that in 2019 made us the winery with the most unique vineyards in the DOCa Rioja. We currently do not have enough wine stock, but we are working to launch more in spring 2021.

Juan Valdelana, present and future of Bodegas Valdelana.
Although the production of this wine is the result of the work of the entire winery team, Juan Valdelana is the oenologist in charge of its production, which makes this award even more exciting. At 28 years old, the younger generation of Valdelana is achieving great successes in the world of wine, creating a very hopeful present and future in the winery. This same year Juan received the award for the best Rioja whites at the Rioja Alavesa Harvest Festival, a contest that also recognized his unique wine in 2018. You can buy all these wines in our online store.
Although Juan’s personal and work life has always been closely connected to Rioja Alavesa, the youngest of this family has also been fortunate to work and experiment in other wineries and wine regions. His experience in Tenerife, Rías Baixas and Napa Valley have been fundamental in his professional development. In the words of Juan himself:
“This award is the recognition of a family’s struggle in the search for a job well done. I grew up seeing my grandfather Ide on top of a tractor, Isidoro selling wine at the door of the winery and my father hugging me with his black red hands. I only dreamed of becoming one day like them, wondering why wine was so special for my family to give their lives for it. Today I am still looking for a reason and it is much bigger than I could imagine. Now it’s my turn to transmit this story, our land, our landscape and put it in every bottle. It is our moment, we are going to enjoy it, with our feet on the ground and our eyes on the sky ”
This recognition of our Seda wine as the best tempranillo in the world is great news to say goodbye to 2020. A complicated year, but with your support and love you have filled with happiness. Thanks for being there!
