Juan, Judit and the Garden of Varieties, the keys to this new award
At the gala held on October 19, 2023 at Solar de Samaniego, the jury made up of professionals and journalists specialized in wine tourism, recognized our wine tourism project as the best Innovative Experience among the twenty-three candidates. This decision has been influenced, first of all, by the work of the new generation of Valdelana, with Judit and Juan at the helm. In their words: “It is above all a recognition of the drive of a new generation of the Valdelana Family, with a very young team, which is demonstrating great enthusiasm, great capacity and great innovation in wine tourism and oenology, even being able to overcome the many achievements of previous generations.
Likewise, the jury highlighted the Garden of Varieties, one of the most important spaces in our winery. This five-hectare vineyard is located on a spectacular bend of the Ebro River. Among these plantations there is a unique vineyard from 1920 and an experimental one with more than one hundred varieties brought from different countries around the world. On the plot there is also a cave winepress for traditional grape treading, a space set up for holding events and a swing with an unbeatable view.
Best Of, one of the most prestigious wine tourism awards
The Best Of Wine Tourism Awards are an initiative of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network which brings together twelve large capitals linked to wine regions: Adelaide (Australia), Bordeaux (France), Cape Town (South Africa), Hawke Bay (New Zealand), Lausanne (Switzerland), Mainz (Germany), Mendoza (Argentina), Napa Valley (United States), Porto (Portugal), Valparaíso (Chile), Verona (Italy) and Bilbao-Rioja (Spain) . This network was created in 1999. Since then, our winery has been awarded four times, including the one mentioned above.
Award for the best winery in Art and Culture in 2017 and 2013
We won two Best of in the Art and Culture category in the 2017 and 2013 editions, an award that recognized the complete wine tourism experience that we offer to our visitors: a journey through the cultural and artistic roots that surround the world of wine. A route that combines archaeological sites in our region with a visit to the ethnographic and wine museum found in our 16th century cellars. The final touch of this experience is the garden already presented.
“Stars & Wine” received a Best Of in 2011
“Stars & Wine” was considered the best Wine Tourism Experience in the Best Of 2011. The stellar pairing is an open-air night tasting from our Garden of Varieties in which Juan Jesús Valdelana guides all attendees through an astronomical journey with the help of a laser and an electronic device. There you can see the close relationship that the constellations have with the history and culture of wine. Before this, attendees will be able to eat and taste our wines while enjoying live music and the sunset at one of the best viewpoints in Rioja Alavesa. The stellar pairing is celebrated several Saturdays during the summer.
In short, the Valdelana project has been recognized by the Best Of up to four times (2023, 2017, 2013 and 2011), a sign of the importance that wine tourism has had in our winery for years. Behind this is our enthusiasm for making different experiences live for all those people who come to visit us from anywhere in the world. We want to thank all of them for the love and support they give us every day and encourage us to continue innovating.
